December reasons to visit Chios

December means Christmas. Snow. Family. And many more.  December means travel overall. Travel with family, travel with kids, travel to meet the unecpected.

Chios is an alternative destination all year round. Hiking paths, pictursque villages, interesting flora and fauna, amazing people and many other reasons for visiting Chios all year round.

In December, great things happen in Chios:

1.Christmas magic at Argentikon

40.000 bulbs for the tallest native decorated tree in Chios (not only) are turning our night into a dream, a Christmas dream. Argentikon Luxury Suites lights up our festive days and Santa Claus is there. A walk around awarded gardens of the estate decorated with uncountable lights, will give you the opportunity to see happy faces allover.

2. Santa Claus boats of Chios

Every New Year’s Eve, downtown Chios, right in the central square, a custom reveals: The Santa Claus boats of Chios, ship replicas crafted by men, demonstrates their beauty, accompanied by their crew – the team that build the boat which actually is smaller replicas of historical ships of Greece naval forces with significant participation to the history of the island and the greater area in general.

This custom is coming from the ages of Balkan Wars where Greek people from Chios, Psara and Asia Minor intended to honor and celebrate the victories of the Greek Naval in sea-battles.

Since then, small groups of friends from various parts of Chios are working months before the day of presentation to prepare the finest ship, either merchant of naval, in accordance with the regulations posed by the Municipality of Chios and the Touring Club of Chios which are the officials organizing the activity.

During the last day of the year, the crew and the boat are travelling to the main square of Chios singing local carols (=painemata) for good health and prosperity while political satire is not missing.

This year, Touring Club of Chios is facing a lot of difficulties to keep the custom alive and the Municipality of Chios is taking care of all expenses, trying also to raise funds for prizing the winning boat.  Because importance is given to the participation and the prevention of the custom for more years to come, how nice to support the custom with our presence…

3. Downtown Christmas happenings

Municipality of Chios and local Cultural Associations are presenting activities for kids and those feel alike almost every day around midday. From crafting Christmas ornaments, singing carols and role playing games, a walk down town Aplotaria’s street, the main commercial pedestrian street of Chios is a must.
