Welcome to Vokaria.

In Vokaria beach of Nenita village is where Amarandos Apartments has been built. Invisible from the small road but still only 15m away from the beach, there is the ideal location for those in search of a comfortable and pleasant vacation, with everything necessary to make your stay an unforgettable one, but without the noisy disadvantages of the larger touristic areas.

Chios Culinary Journey, Vokaria in June 2016

This week is all about gastronomy. We will find out about the main Chios products: cheese, mastiha, wine and honey. Learn to use numerous vegetables and wild herbs the way our grandmothers did. Pick vegies from the olive farm and cook your dinner with our cook. Visit artisan producers, sample honey, wine, olives, collect herbs and produce cheese. Discover the traditional Chios, the flavor of bread baked into wooden oven and try many different cheese varieties. It’s all about simple, sustainable and natural food.

Day 1:- Arrival

Pick up from the airport – or the port of Chios. Transfer to your accommodation asper your travel arrangements – in the area of Kampos , an area protected by the Greek Ministry of Culture, with paved alleys, narrow streets and citrus groves or the seaside village of Vokaria, a picturesque seaport of Nenita village south of Chios. Free evening to explore the area – bikes and cars are available. Welcome dinner at a nearby tavern with drinks and meze while information and discussions on the schedule of the week will occur.

Day 2: – Mastiha walk

A walking tour to Apolichnon castle of Armolia village, Visit to Pyrgi, the biggest Mastihohori (=a village producing Mastiha) and Mesta, a medieval fortress shaped village. Lunch at Lithi with seafood and local spirits (oyzo, souma (a local version of grappa, distilled from figs) and Mastiha liqueur). Return to our hotel and preparation for our 1st Cooking Lesson, the fruits of which will be appreciated during our dinner.

Day 3: – Local Farmers and Producers of local products

We will be visiting Citrus museum where we will learn about the history of citrus fruits and their impact to the local economy tiil date while we will be able to sample spoon sweets and jams, all crafted by the production of the farm where the museum is situated. Fresh Chios Beer, Handmade pastas and local cheese factory visits will follow. – Al fresco lunch at a local “kafeneio” (café). Evening is free to spend it as you like.

Day 4: – Mastiha Cultivation

Delve deeper into Mastiha Cultivation, an UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Spent the day in a Mastiha grove where local farmers and Mastiha producers will share the secrets of cultivating Mastiha from a to z. A light picnic will keep us on the way home for starting the preparation for our 2nd Cooking Lesson, outcome of which will be served as our dinner.

Day 5: Herbs vs Spices.

Our 3rd Cooking Lesson and Lunch will guide us through centuries. We will explore changes of Chios Gastronomy over time in a unique workshop where we will appreciate the use of fresh herbs. Rest of the day is free to enjoy on your own secret beauties across the island. Optional: Chios Bike Ride (25€ p.p. –

Day 6: Fruits of the sea

Free time to relax by the beach or to do whatever pleases each one of you on your own. Early the afternoon a fishing tour guided by local fishermen will give us the main ingredients of our 4th and ultimate dinner Cooking Lesson.

Day 7: – Local Winery & Farewell Dinner

Visit at the local winery – spent some time at the vineyard and have wine tastings during the tour at the winery. Chios is famous for its Ariousios wine from local grape varieties of Krasero and Agianitis, nowhere else can be found. Al fresco lunch under the shades of palm trees in Agio Galas Multipurpose establishment, where a visit to the cave (optional 3€ p.p) and a tour at an old church and to cultural exhibition is possible. Farewell Dinner at a traditional Chios taverna.

Day 8: – Departure

Breakfast. There is a possibility of exploring Chios Castle and Chios town depending on further travelling arrangements.
